Global Freelancers Survey – The New Voice of Freelancers

LimeExchange recently conducted a highly successful global freelancer’s survey in partnership with Payoneer, Thousands of freelancers participated, and the survey included many questions related to the freelance marketplace and industry.

The main objective for this survey is to understand freelancers expectation from the marketplace, where they go to find freelancing jobs, and their feelings and predictions on the state of freelancing in the current global economic scenario.We are sharing the survey results of some important questions that we hope will give  a valuable insight into the freelancing industry.

The rising demand for freelancers has given a significant boost to freelancing over the last few years. More and more people are choosing a freelancing career over a full time job. The survey shows that most professionals, a 59% margin, feel that freelancing is preference versus full time employment.  It gives them the flexibility to work from home and set their own schedule.

When we asked freelancers about their expectations on the growth of the freelancing marketplace, a whopping 79% believe it is going to continue growing.   This is a strong indicator that the freelancing sector will witness a major boom in the coming years.

With the rise of social networking, we wanted to understand how freelancers are utilizing these new platforms.   Facebook far outpaced other social sites, more than doubling the usage of the business focused Linked in and media darling Twitter.

The survey also reaffirmed anecdotal information that Services, Writing & Translation and Web Development are some of the most popular and fastest growing project categories.  A growing global workforce and increased emphasis on outsourcing are two factors that contribute to this trend.

We asked freelancers which source(s) they use for finding freelancing jobs and technology fueled approaches led the way.  Freelance marketplaces proved to be the most popular method, followed by search engines, word of mouth referrals, and other online resources like forums, social networking platforms, and classified sites,
